4 Critical Ways to Improve Your Resume

4 Critical Ways to Improve Your Resume

Building a killer resume has always been a daunting task; but these days, it’s more overwhelming than ever before. Online job portals give recruiters access to thousands of candidates; if your resume doesn’t hit the mark, you can miss out on some great opportunities.

Check out these 4 critical ways to improve your resume:

1. Replace the Career Objective with a Summary

Contrary to what you may have been told, a career objective section is total fluff! It’s something that we all thought we needed to include in a resume when we first started looking for a job — and wrongly so! Recruiters don’t care what about what you want from a job; their only concern is what you can do for them.

Add a career summary instead. It offers a brief description of what you’ve done in the past and frames your resume for recruiters before they begin reading the rest of the content.

2. Keep it Concise and Effective

In a competitive job environment, your focus should always be on how to make your resume stand out. Everything you mention on your resume should pack a punch. Avoid putting anything in there that doesn’t benefit your cause.

Concentrate on adding information that impresses the reader. Quantify your achievements; use statistics, percentages, and dollar amounts to give your claims credibility. That being said, don’t overdo it — no one likes a show-off.  Add just enough statistics to make your resume a compelling read.

When you do mention statistics, don’t forget to give some context. For example, if you increased sales by 50%, tell them how it impacted the company’s market share so they know the extent of what you contributed.

Under the paragraphs where you discuss your previous jobs, begin each line with a powerful action verb and remove filler words like “given the task of…”, “duties include,” etc.

Stick to short and straightforward sentences.

3. Include Career Highlights

If you find yourself simply listing job responsibilities in every paragraph, know that thousands of other applicants are doing the same.

It’s true that recruiters look at the kind of work you’ve done in the past to determine whether you’re a good fit for the vacancy they’re advertising, but just listing responsibilities isn’t going to make you stand out.

Grab their attention by highlighting the contributions you made in past jobs.

For example, people who are applying for an event coordinator position can draw focus by mentioning the largest events they organized and the budgets they’ve worked with.

4. Incorporate Keywords

New-age recruiters use Application Tracking Systems to scan resumes. Automated tracking systems work by detecting specific keywords in a document. If your online resume doesn’t contain the right keywords, it’ll likely be overlooked.

Follow the above tips and create a resume recruiters can’t resist. Once your resume is completed, upload it on Jobslog and start looking for a job!
