Position Summary: As a key leader in this rapidly growing research enterprise, the Nurse Practioner in the Briskin Center for Clinical Research delivers state of the art clinical care in the development a robust best in class Phase 1 program and continuously recalibrates research care aimed at enhancing interdepartmental communication, collaboration, and coordination of care among disease teams, physicians and inpatient nursing. As one of the primary points of contact for the CRU, the Nurse Practioner ensures the delivery of excellent patient care; the application of the highest standards of clinical competence and quality improvement. In addition, the Nurse Practioner facilitates collaborative relationships among the Investigational Drug Pharmacy, Clinical Research Lab and the CRU infusion team. S/he delivers independent direct medical management for a defined ambulatory clinical trial population, according to the IRB approved protocol and in collaboration with the treating physicians, and the Medical Director of the Briskin Center for Clinical Research. S/he provides care within scope of license, and provides professional practice as a health team member as defined by departmental policies with institutional approval. Emphasis is placed on health promotion, protocol specific follow-up and patient education, combining the qualities of both best in class nursing and medicine. Acts as a patient advocate in all ethical and legal aspects, and in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guidelines. Key Responsibilities include: * Utilizes the City of Hope nursing process in clinical practice. * Assumes responsibility for independent, direct medical management of a defined patient population, according to protocol guidelines and in collaboration with Medical Director and Associate Medical director of the Briskin Center for Clinical Research. * Performs physical examinations applying the medical model and nursing process to patient care problems that require medical intervention and skill. Strives to maintain consistency of quality research practices and patient care. * Develops protocols/standardized procedures for practice, in collaboration with the Senior Director and the Medical Director and Associate Medical Director, for Nurse Practitioners in the department. * Assists in developing methods and systems for provision of medical care within protocol guidelines, and overall research department operations. * Provides coverage and oversight of nursing patient care in the Briskin Center for Clinical Research as needed. * Maintains open lines of communication with the primary investigator (PI), Medical Director, Associate Medical Director physicians and multidisciplinary health team regarding patient information. * Under supervision of the Medical director and Associate Medical director for the Briskin Center for Clinical Research, performs protocol specific procedures and interval physical assessments for evaluation of patient progress, applying techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion. * Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings, consulting with the Medical Director/Associate Medical Director of the Briskin Center for Clinical Research physicians, , PI and other investigators when indicated. * Develops and implements protocol specific and research patient education activities; provides education and counseling to patients. * Develops and participates in performance improvement activities to evaluate the program's effectiveness in meeting patient care and departmental needs. * Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending in-service meetings, and workshops. * Attends and participates in disease team and SIV meetings as needed. Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration: * Master's Degree * Four years clinical NP experience * Five years Oncology and research experience. Required Certification/Licensure: * Must have a current CA Nurse Practitioner license * CPR certification * Furnishing License required within first six (6) months in position * DEA Number within first six (6) months in position, if required by specialty department * Hold a National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner from a national certifying body recognized by the BRN and meets eligibility for billing.
