The Director of Logistics is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all modes of transportation within Calumet. The position oversees the Truck, Rail and Export Operations Departments as well as the Order to Cash Process Excellence department. They will be responsible to direct and perform analysis, planning and forecasting for the rail fleet and trucking requirements and to manage, analyze, negotiate and establish rail/truck transportation freight rates and service proposals/contracts. They will ensure the integrity of freight condition records in SAP involving rail/truck movements to ensure correct freight charges are applied or invoiced to customers. They are responsible for handling service and compliance issues. They will manage the export transportation process and ensure global trade requirements are met. They will need to communicate and interact with Calumet operating groups and plant personnel in relation to rail/truck transportation issues and requirements.


  • Manage rail transportation team to support Calumet's marketing needs. Responsibilities include overseeing maintenance and repair of railcars, allocation and utilization of tank car fleet, resolution of railroad service issues and freight payment

  • Set goals and produce management reports. Manage and audit rail car repairs, maintenance bills, rental statements, ad valorem tax reports

  • Interacts on a frequent basis with railroad representatives regarding services, industry issues, new routes and railroad rates. Negotiate rates and review contracts for over 6 railroad authorities

  • Manage truck transportation team. Responsible for managing carriers (LTL, Truck Load and Bulk for both Fuels and Specialty Products business) including rate negotiations, contract review and execution, carrier assignment, motor carrier qualification, carrier registration, analysis and evaluation of costs, alternative transportation, resolution of carrier service issues, regulatory compliance, fuel surcharge, freight reconciliation and payment

  • Interacts on a frequent basis with trucking representatives regarding services and freight rates

  • Oversees SAP TM platform including setting processes and procedures for all users of SAP TM

  • Responsible for managing and developing monthly analysis performance report. Establish key performance metrics and identify opportunities to enhance operations

  • Plans and direct work, provides training, facilitate interaction with other groups. Establish goals/objectives, sets performance criteria

  • Conducts employee performance reviews and seeks opportunities for professional development

  • Manage internal/external audit requests. Participate with management in long range distribution/transportation plans and budget planning, and other corporate wide or business unit initiatives as required

  • Develop, establish and enforce processes and procedures to ensure the integrity of transportation operations

  • Work with Finance, Order Management, Pricing, Supply Chain, and others to identify opportunities and improve transportation activities / operations: reduce number of accruals; minimize invoice discrepancies, claims and other inefficiencies that might be identified

  • Interact daily with various business units. Extensive communications required with Order Entry, Supply, Sales, Pricing, Purchasing, Refineries and plants

  • Lead or facilitate initiatives/issues involving transportation concerns or matters with various operating, refinery, plant and supply groups to enhance performance of Calumet's ground transportation requirements

  • Manage and supervise Export activities: arrange for shipment via truck or intermodal lines; select and direct freight forwarders; procure rate quotations; ensure compliance with Export rules and regulations, and evaluate costs and alternative transportation. Manage the efficient operation of Export activities

  • Monitor Transportation Regulations: a) Monitor compliance with D.O.T. product shipping regulations, (b) Monitor Safety records, (c) Obtain certificates of insurance, (d) Verify operating authorities

  • 10+ years of logistics work experience in a corporate environment

  • Bulk truck and rail transportation experience

  • Working knowledge of SAP

  • Demonstrated progressive leadership experience with significant supply chain, logistics, manufacturing, and/or procurement fields

  • Accomplished in IT systems integration

  • Experience in creating supply chain strategies and successfully leading large-scale change with a deep understanding of domestic and global supply chain elements

  • Experience driving improvements across highly complex supply chains
